HR Dashboard - DRAFT Q4 Training 071607.ppt

Meeting Notes:

Jim introduced himself ans asked folks when they introduced themselves to include a comment on whether or not they are currently providing any reporting or scorecards to their executive teams.  We had five people on the call today.

Wes Stockman; does a monthly reporting scorecard and has online dashboard for execs.  Has a monthly formal report and has an online report as well.

Cathy Perkins; does annual strategic planning and report on goals and objectives -- used to do a monthly report with students, etc.  Stopped doing report and no one missed it.

Jay Naumann -- RC Willey.  Currenly not reporting -- on purpose.  Holding company "hostage" until the company purchases an LMS.  At previous employer used his LMS to create report -- used system to query report.  Showed what each person had taken and would post the reports for each group.

Mirella Adante -- does quarterly reports based on the plan for the year.  Reports on progress on the plan including metrics.

Jim then reviewed his L&D results for Q4 from the HR Dashboard.

Wes:  With regards to providing effectiveness, used a control group and didn't provide training to a certain district.  (used VP of Sales to create a control group).  The pitch to execs was the purpose of the control group was to evaluate the effectiveness of the training -- and see if he and his team could make it better.

Jay (Added post meeting) – I find that the questioning of data is an “all or nothing” event. Ether they accept your data - no questions asked, or you end up with a Six Sigma Black Belt questioning every piece of data you present.  The hard thing is you never know which you are going to get before the meeting – so you always have to prepare for the questions.  I would recommend everyone get some six sigma training – Black belt is for engineering and Green Belt is for accounting/HR/administration. After you have been thought a class and done some projects you can talk data with the best of them and hold your own.

Mirella:  do any of you currently calculate ROI on your training projects?

Wes:  Uses the Phillips model to calculate ROI in his company for select projects.  He typically doesn't share the results with the company, but rather uses the information to improve his programs and efficiencies.

Wes:  Suggestion to Jim on his training dashboard:  in addtion to showing percentages -- includes a couple of key metrics from the business.  Perhaps share the regional sales numbers and the L&D contribution.  They track managers bonus and compare it to how many people get sent to training and successfully complete.   Also uses retention as a metric.

Jim:  Agreed that these are great suggestions.  Was also going to include stats from Loss prevention, as that has continued to decline since introduction of the Learning Center

General discussion on the repercussions on the low scores for training in the MidAtlantic Region.  Talked about the correlation between traiing scores and other business results.

Jay: asked about aknowledgement for completion of training.  In a prior employer they provided a paper certificate, but he said it wasn't that great.

Jim:  The current technology doesn't allow for creating a certificate of completion, and given the turn in the field organization, its not feasible for the training function to create certificates for every employee who successfully completes the onboarding training modules.  With the new technology (PCS in all stores) we will  be able to address.

Wes:  They use a formal dinner with the sales staff to aknowledge completion.  It's sort of like 'graduation" with staff  getting their new business cards with their new title.

General dicussion regarding the next call - and lack of topic.  Should we still meet?  Should we discuss the ASTD proposal and whether or not there will be learning labs at the next conference.  Jay says that he hasn't heard back from the ASTD, but there were a lot of hits to the site after the aplication was submitted.  We mentioned that he calls ASTD every two weeks to see if they are going to have a similar 'learning lab" at the next conference.  To date, they have not confirmed.

With regards to increasing participation on these biweekly meetings, Mirella emailed some other former training contacts at different places -- but they obviously didn't join today.  We may want to widen our net.

We will meet again in two weeks, and have a strategy meeting to discuss the future of the group; strategies to increase our membership and participation, and to map out the next several meetings and calls.  Jim will provide a call in number.
